Hello
I am Sandy Shepherd, editor, proofreader and content writer of non-fiction and academic text, specialising in topics with an African perspective.
I am an Accredited Text Editor (English) with the Professional Editors' Guild of South Africa, and a member of the Editorial Freelancers' Association (EFA) of the USA.
I subscribe to using Plain English in non-fiction texts for maximum understanding.
My Story
Born in Kenya, raised in several countries, including South Africa, with a Master's in Social Anthropology (at the London School of Economics) featuring a thesis on Zulu political systems, I consider myself an Afropolitan, which explains my interest in texts by African academics and on Africa.
I have more than 40 years of experience in non-fiction publishing, in the UK, Canada and South Africa, including a decade as a university press publisher, focusing on the Humanities, again with an African perspective. Furthermore, I was instrumental in the creation of an accredited qualification for a Commissioning Editor/Junior Publisher for South Africa's government agency engaged in skills development.
My life and my interests have led to an extensive general knowledge and skills in several languages. You know your text is in capable hands when we agree to work together.
